16 Year old Lithuanian, Gustas Grinbergas, who started his year with a victory at “The Bend” in Australia, has left for Malaysia for the 3 rd round of the Asian Le Mans Series. Again, together with Rick Ware Racing and teammate Cody Ware, they will fight for victory.
The Asian Le Mans Series is a winter series, being hosted at the best and most beautiful circuits in Asia and Australia. Just like the European Le Mans Series, the Asian Le Mans Series is organized by the ACO and runs on virtually the same rules. Gustas raced in the European Le Mans Series in 2019 with the Italian “Oregon Team” in the LMP3 category. In Malaysia he will drive in the much faster LMP2 category with the Ligier JSP2, which is powered by a 4,5 l Nissan engine, which has about 500 HP.
“I’m a lot more confident coming into Malaysia. I know the team; I know the car. The track will be new to me, but I’ve seen it many times on TV during the F1 races and spent time in a simulator learning the track, so I shouldn’t have issues adapting to the circuit. The biggest challenge will be the tropical heat and humidity, but everyone will have to deal with that. For the first time in the history of the Asian Le Mans Series the race will run into the night, so the temperatures should cool and make it a bit easier on us”, – said a very happy Gustas Grinbergas.
There are two Asian Le Mans Series rounds happening in February, but the team together with Gustas have already got great chances to win the Championship in Malaysia. And together with the championship they would win an invitation to the biggest race in the world – The 24 Hours of Le Mans. Only factory backed teams get an automatic entry into this prestigious race, everybody else must earn their place on the grid through ACO rules championships around the World.
“The team was very happy with the performance of Gustas in Australia and we immediately began negotiations for the next 2 rounds. We went back and forward a lot and only last week settled on a deal both parties were happy with. I’m very happy with the Lithuanian companies who helped us on very short notice.
„DYNAMI:T”, „Degarda“, „Manvesta“, „AutoAkstė“, „Irseva“ got us the support we needed to get ourselves to Malaysia”,- said the Father and Manager of Gustas, Darius Grinbergas.
The first two Practice sessions are on Thursday and the next two are on Friday, one of them being a night session. Qualifying will be at noon on Saturday and the race starts at 17:00 local time.
